Short-Term Therapy Success: Ms. P

Older adult woman working with physical therapist in the gym

Ms. P. admitted to Shady Lawn following hospitalization for knee replacement with resultant debility and increased weakness. Ms. P’s goals were to get therapy for 2 weeks to get stronger and improve her activity tolerance and then to return home with her spouse. Ms. P received occupational and physical therapy services including core and extremity strengthening exercise, neuromuscular facilitation, posture training, balance training, gait, energy conservation, and activities of daily living. Ms. P was walking fifty feet on admission with supervision and multiple rest breaks, standing unsupported for activities of daily living for 3 minutes, and needed partial help for dressing and hygiene. After working hard in therapy, Ms. P walked 150 feet independently with rolling walker, improved her standing balance to 10 minutes, and took part in activities of daily living independently. Ms. P was able to discharge home 2 weeks after receiving occupational and physical therapy. We wish Ms. P the best of luck as she returns home with her family.
